CEU Course Description:
Behavior analysts are required to adhere to the Ethics Code for Behavior Analysts (BACB, 2020) in both research and applied settings. It is crucial for behavior analysts to understand the ethics code, potential barriers to behaving ethically, and how to navigate complex situations. Multiple Ethics Code standards will be discussed, and suggestions for how to navigate research will be provided. This course will also provide a brief history of events in behavior modification research that triggered the development of ethical guidelines and principles for research with human participants. Then, implementation of diverse and inclusive research practices beyond the BACB Ethics Code will be discussed. Finally, the course will close with information about how to balance effective research designs with clinical effectiveness. In this course, participants will learn to (1) discuss specific Ethics Code standards and how to apply them in applied research, (2) identify several principles and values that guide scientific research, (3) promote equity, diversity, inclusion, and access in research settings, and (4) consider how to ethically balance research designs with clinical effectiveness.
